Պատմաբանի համար կարևոր է հասկանալ, թե արխիվը ինչպես և ինչ իշխանության կողմից է կազմվել: Արխիվի կազմը թելադրում է, թե ինչ թեզ է առաջ տարվելու ուսումնասիրության ընթացքում: Գիտնականը պիտի կարողանա ստեղծել իր սեփական արխիվը և այդ արխիվի կազմակերպման մեթոդը: Դա նրան թույլ կտա նյութի հետ աշխատել՝ անկախանալով արտաքին արխիվի տրամաբանությունից:
